The competition within the breakfast cereal arena finally pressured Quaker Oats to introduce a new pre-sweetened cold cereal in the 1960's. As a result, Quaker Oats allotted 80% of their advertising budget to Cap'n Crunch and his sea-faring friends. Jay Ward's animation studio set the stage by introducing the S.S. Guppy, and within a year Cap'n Crunch cereal was outselling 55 competitors.

Soon thereafter, Quake was introduced, and was supposed to provide "earthquake power!" Quake's character never achieved super hero status, however, and was taken off the market a few years later.

Quaker next introduced the "vitamin powered sugary cereal Quisp for Quazy energy." Quisp was up with the times, being based on the Moonman from Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons. The popular cereal left the face of the planet along with Quisp in 1985. (Well- almost! Click on the picture of Quisp here to find out more.)

In 1964, the colorful Toucan Sam appeared promoting the fruit flavored Froot Loops cereal. The popular jingle went "Follow your nose..." and he certainly has a big one! Froot Loops is still popular today, and television ads can be seen featuring Toucan Sam during saturday morning cartoons still.

Lucky charms was another fruity cereal of the 60's. Lucky magically appeared in 1964, and continues to charm kids of all ages. Lucky's full name is L.C. Leprechaun, and his slogan is "Magically Delicious."
